 Shanghai Museum

The Shanghai Museum is really a top-notch site to see whether you live here or are just visiting.

The museum houses quite a collection of bronze objects - which influenced the design of the building itself, a huge bronze vessel. Sound boring?  Perhaps for some, but if you’re interested in the more ceremonial aspects of Chinese culture, the various bronzes for serving wine, etc. are quite interesting.

One exhibit I find intriguing is the extensive coin collection, many from ancient Persia Central Asian states. We all know Chinese trade networks were vast and that Roman nobles wore silk, but the evidence through coins, and the connection to the various empires that came and went are fascinating for anyone who loves history.  The museum also has collections of paintings, ceramics and sculptures that are beautiful and great to wander around when you have a free afternoon.

Temporary exhibits are usually well-done and have meaningful pieces in them.  Watch the local magazines like That’s Shanghai or take a drive or walk past the museum (at People’s Park) to check out what’s on.
